You’re good at what you do and you have a passion for it.
You’ve made a name for yourself as the top salesman in company or the person everyone wants on their project because you know how to get it done. Whatever it is, you’re at the top of your game.
Now you’re being groomed for a promotion into upper management. But you’re not sure you want it. You aren’t sure you agree with the direction management is headed and how they treat others in the organization.
Your goal has always been to learn, achieve, grow and move into management. But now it doesn’t look like it’s the grand destination you thought it would be, and you really like what you do in sales working with your customers to find solutions for them.
Most people go for the promotion, thinking the position and title will make a difference in how they feel. Maybe they even think they would them be able to make some changes. They quickly find themselves mired in the processes and oversight of the management machine…and they hate it.
So what do you do?
You need to start with identifying your passion. What is it that you really enjoy about what you do? If you really get jazzed working with your customers, then make that your goal…to be the best.
What does it look like to you to be the best? How does it make you feel? Do you look forward to getting up every day and helping more people? What is it for you that gets your juices flowing about what you do?
That’s passion! If the thought of a promotion doesn’t give you the same juice, maybe you need to explore it more. You need to stop and consider if it’s the right move for you.
Promotions are great…if it fits with your passion.
