The 1 Secret to Achieving Success in 2018

The 1 Secret to Achieving Success in 2018

Posted by Mark Schinnerer Goal Setting, Success

Success can’t be that simple, right?

You’ve seen all the methods of goal setting and developing plans to achieve your goals. But a lot of them leave out this one secret.

COMMITMENT

You can set all the goals you want, create a detailed plan for achieving them, and tell everyone around you about your wonderful goals.

Unless you are truly committed to achieving the goals, they will be just a wish.

Our commitment is on display every day. It seems today, failing to keep a commitment and live up to an agreement is more and more common. The fact is, every time we make a commitment and/or break it directly impacts our integrity and character.

Commitment and actions go together like a hand and glove. These two together will form the integrity of giving your word. Following through on your commitments requires courage of character and a conscious choice to complete the task you committed to.

Commitment is scary…unless you are not a person of your word.

In a group discussion the other day, we were announcing our goals for 2018. It was great to hear about all the wonderful achievements to be accomplished this year.

However, there was a discussion about whether you should announce your goals publicly. Seth Godin says to announce the to the world and go create them.  Others say you should keep them to yourself or only let them be known to close friends who will support you in your journey.

The problem they say, is we get a lot of pleasure from others congratulating us for having such lofty goals. That kind of praise sings like sweet melodies in our ears. We then bask in this praise instead of working on our goals. Typically, this is how New Year’s Resolutions go.

Success Requires Commitment

The more accurate path to success is to only make your goals and plans known to people close to you who will support your efforts and hold you accountable. How can you tell if they are the right ones to tell? If they praise your for your goal…they are not. If they praise you for your commitment to growth, change, improvement, and accomplishing those goals…hang around those!

Having goals is great. But committing to your goals is what counts.

I’ve let myself down many times over the years because I had a wonderful goal but wasn’t committed to it.

Make 2018 a different kind of goal setting year. Once you set your goals and define your plan, find a commitment friend and commit to following the plan.

Otherwise, you’re just wishing.
