It’s that time of year again. More than half of you will set at least one New Year’s Resolution. You’ve probably done it before and chances are you didn’t last very long.
By January 12th, 80% of the people who set New Year’s Resolutions will give up. And in the end, only 8% will achieve their resolution goal.
The most popular resolutions are related to losing weight, eating healthier and getting fit. If you have set one of these goals in the past, and are considering doing it again in 2019 you’re doomed to fail unless you change the way you set the goal of your New Year’s Resolution.
But this year you can have your best year yet by setting goals that will be much easier to keep. The reason you have failed in the past is because you probably were never told how to set your goal correctly. I typically see three main reasons goals fail.
Too many goals.
If one goal is good, ten would be great wouldn’t it? Everyone would think you were a productive machine wouldn’t they? Well, you just set yourself up for failure.
We can’t keep track of more than two or three serious goals. So I encourage you to set no more than three.
Not specific
If you’re wanting to lose weight…again this year…then don’t make your New Year’s Resolution the same as you have in the past. If you say, ‘I’m going to lose weight, get fit and eat healthier’, I’m sorry but you’ll fail. Can you tell me how you’re going to do that? If you don’t know you can’t get there.
You don’t have a plan.
It’s not your fault. You never were taught how to set goals correctly. New Year’s Resolutions are a great idea because we like beginnings. And the beginning of the new year is a time to start over. So this year, I encourage you to also set a plan for HOW you will achieve your resolution goal and WHAT you’re going to do to get there.
New Year’s Resolutions are fun to make. Most of us do it because we feel we should but we’re never committed. Well, I challenge you to make 2019 a different year.
