“Today is going to be the best day of my life!”
Recently, I started journaling in the morning. I start with that statement…every day. It frames my mindset for the day on how to make it “the best day of my life”.
Positive affirmations are important to develop a positive mindset. If you’ve spent any time reading about successful athletes, actors, and business leaders, you’ve seen they all use positive affirmations in their success.
But Mark, you ask, how does it work? Do you just write it down or repeat it all the time?
Well, I’ll answer with ‘Yes and…’
Yes, you need to write it down. Yes, you need to read it every day. And yes, you need to keep it in front of you all the time. But that in itself won’t get you where you want to be. There are 2 important aspects of affirmations you can’t leave out that make them effective:
Belief and Action
Belief
If you don’t have belief in WHAT you want to accomplish, or belief in your ABILITY to accomplish what you desire, you’ll go nowhere and be frustrated with your current situation.
Remember the story of The Little Engine That Could? Staring a huge hill in the face that the other, bigger engines refused to attempt, the little engine pulled the train over the hill while chanting: “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can”.
Because just like the little engine did, you can accomplish what ever you want in life. Using positive affirmations is important, you just need to understand the power of belief and apply it to your life. Here are 5 ways you can put belief to work in your life:
- Visualize what you want
- Determine to change and grow your mindset
- Stop thinking limiting thoughts
- Write down your goal and what you believe
- Take action…start!
Action
As Nike has made famous, “Just Do It” is more than a slogan or a brand. Taking action on your goals is a physical input into your brain of what you’re trying to accomplish.
It doesn’t matter what you say you want or what you say you’re going to do. What matters is the action you take. If you don’t take action, you’re only wasting your time and your words.
Watch a toddler start trying to walk. At first it’s a struggle just to balance enough to stand. Then a first step and a plop on the butt. Then more tries and a step, and a fall. Eventually they get better, take a few steps, then a few more and before you know it they’re off and running.
Consistent, small actions help you gain confidence and learn what works. Using positive affirmations help you to keep trying and you start to get better at it and it becomes easier. Here are 5 keys to taking action that lasts:
- Start where you are
- Take the first small step
- Keep making small steps
- Learn what works and what doesn’t
- Don’t be afraid to keep trying
So, small daily actions may not show much progress in a week or even a month, but long-term consistent action – even small action – ends in big results.
Having a dream or goal you really want, but not believing you can have it leads to a frustrating life. Trying to figure out what action to take is hard if you don’t have a clear vision of where you want to go and end up.
Because of that, my group coaching program, Planting The Seed, is a great place to identify where you want to be in your life and figure out the actions you need to take to get there. It’s a small group of no more than 10 who want to have more opportunities and success in their life.
So if you’re tired of living in frustration, or being held hostage to your current situation, then join us for the next group. We begin on April 2nd and it only runs for six weeks. In six weeks you’ll learn how to develop a vision of where you want to go and what you want in life, set actionable goals, and develop a plan of action.
